In my daily duties as an employment screener, the question comes up a lot. An E-Verify employer agent such as Info Quest, Inc. - a nationwide background screening provider accredited by The National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBSŪ) - can assist employers with E-Verify compliance and help them avoid government audits and penalties for non-compliance.
All employers, by law, must complete Form I-9. E-Verify is closely linked to Form I-9, but participation in E-Verify is voluntary for most employers. After an employee is hired to work for pay, the employee and employer complete Form I-9. After an employee begins work for pay, the employer or its agent enters the information from Form I-9 into E-Verify where it is compared to millions of government records. E-Verify then returns an eligibility status as Eligible to Work or Not Authorized to Work .
E-Verify must not be used to pre-screen before hire and must not be used selectively; it must be used for ALL new hires regardless of citizen status. The program was originally established in 1997 as the Basic Pilot Program along with two other programs created to prevent illegal aliens from getting jobs.
According to the DHS website, more than 238,000 employers now use E-Verify. Over 1,400 companies enroll in the program every week.
